Every dog owner, before going to the beach or the mountains, always wonders whether their dog will like the water or not. Water is part of nature, but this does not mean that all dogs like it. The same thing happens with people; not everyone likes the beach or the pool. The same applies to dogs.
There are some dog breeds that, due to their constitution or ancestry, enjoy and love being in the water. Some of these include the Golden Retriever, the Labrador, the Spanish Water Dog, the Cocker Spaniel… Even many mixed-breed dogs love water.
One thing that the most skilled dogs in the water might have in common is that they live in the countryside, in nature, or are used to seeing water in swamps or at the beach. It could even be due to ancestral behaviors.
For example, one of the peculiar breeds is the Cocker Spaniel. One of the reasons they can swim and like water is that one of their ancestral behaviors was duck hunting. Therefore, they are born with a great ability to swim, and thus, they like water.
This doesn't mean that all dogs of these breeds like water, because there are always exceptions. And as we mentioned before, many mixed-breed dogs also love it.
Dogs with shorter limbs, such as a Pug or Bulldog, usually find it harder to swim, but this doesn't mean they don't like water or can't swim. Almost all dogs are born with the instinct to swim.
Tips on how to act with your dog at the beach or swamp
If you've never been to the beach or a swamp with your dog and don't know if they like water or not, here are some tips that can help you:
- Don't force them to go into the water.
- Relax and observe how your dog behaves when they reach the shore; go in little by little with them.
- Throw a toy to see if they go after it.
- Don't shout or get nervous with the waves; this might upset your dog.
The most important thing is not to force them, as this will make them more afraid. Some dogs, when they see their owners in the water, dare to go with them. Your dog might even dive headfirst into the water, and you won't need to follow these tips.
