If you are, like us, an animal lover, it's very likely that you've found yourself in a situation where you have to live with several types of them in your home. The most common case is usually between cats and dogs, who are not exactly known for getting along well. For harmony to reign in the environment, the most important factor is to respect the space and organization of each species. Cats, for example, are much more independent and solitary than dogs, who always seek our company. Each of them will establish a hierarchy in the home according to their instinct, so we should interfere as little as possible. Constantly intervening or scolding them for behaviors that we perceive as negative can incite conflicts instead of stopping them.
If you've been lucky enough for your animals to live together from the early stages of their lives, it will be much easier for them to get along, as positive reinforcements (rewards for good behavior, for example) are more effective the earlier they start. But, if that's not your case, the next step you should take is to introduce them properly.
Regardless of which of your pets arrived first, the most important thing for a good introduction is that all animals are calm. To do this, try to do it in a spacious area with exits so that they don't feel trapped or pressured. Intervene as little as possible between them, allowing them to look and sniff each other so they can get familiar, but take certain precautions (such as keeping the dog on a leash, for example).
It's very normal for your pets to be standoffish during these first encounters, but don't worry, that doesn't mean that harmony in the home is unfeasible. Always try to reinforce good behaviors (when they are calm with each other) with your voice and with treats for each one. Cats and dogs, by nature, are not animals predisposed to getting along, so your primary goal should be for them to tolerate each other to foster good coexistence, not for them to be inseparable companions.
Another issue that often causes conflict, especially at the beginning of the relationship, is food. Therefore, always try to feed them in separate areas, although this will cease to be a problem once they are completely familiar with each other.
Finally, remember that animals can also be very jealous of each other, so it's important that each one has their own clearly differentiated toys. This way, in addition to keeping them entertained and happy, you will make them feel special individually and prevent competition from being fostered.
