In Spain, there are increasing numbers of Pet Friendly hotels and beaches that allow animals. Benalmádena, a municipality in Málaga, inaugurated Benalcan, Benalmádena's first dog beach, in June 2019.
Tajo de la Soga beach has been equipped with a special shower and drinking fountain for pets and waste bins, in addition to the corresponding beach furniture for pet owners. Furthermore, the area will be delimited and properly signposted.
This beach is one of Benalmádena's wildest beaches, featuring several coves and a floor of coarse, dark sand. It has a length of 400 meters and a width of 15 meters, providing ample space for pets to enjoy the beach experience.
"We have been working on this project for months; it hasn't been easy to find a beach that would adapt to the needs, and this one was chosen for its good location and low crowds," declared Benalmádena's councilor for beaches to the media of La Opinión de Málaga.
Beach Usage Rules
Regarding the rules of coexistence and safety for the dog beach, they have not yet been published, but the general rules for beaches in Andalusia must be taken into account:
- Dog owners must carry their pet's documentation.
- Dogs must be controlled by their owners.
- Potentially dangerous dogs must wear a muzzle.
- Owners must pick up their pets' waste.
