The Schnauzer is a dog of German origin. The first records of them date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Historically, they have been used as guard and companion dogs. In fact, in their origins, given their good relationship with horses, they were used as stable dogs. Especially in southern Germany, because they were always on the lookout, preventing the entry
of rodents into the stables. For this reason, and due to their elastic, elegant, and agile movements, they were familiarly known as "rat-catchers."
Today, this has changed a lot, and Schnauzers have moved from stables to our homes. Kennel clubs generally subdivide this breed into three varieties, according to their size: Miniature, Standard, and Giant Schnauzer.
What are Schnauzers like?
They are medium-sized. Their height at the withers ranges from 45 to 50 centimeters. Their weight is between 14 and 20 kilograms. In general, they are vigorous and compact. Their tail tends to take the shape of a saber or a sickle.
Their cranial region stands out for its strong, elongated skull, with a well-defined stop between the eyebrows. Their face has a well-developed, always black nose with open nostrils. Their muzzle ends in a truncated wedge shape. Their lips are black and firm; their jaw is strong and powerful. As for their gaze, their characteristic liveliness that makes them seem so intelligent, as well as the depth of their dark eyes—undoubtedly aided by their bushy eyebrows—make us melt when they look at us "making that face." Their folded and drooping ears do the rest.
As for their coat, it is hard, wiry, and dense. It consists of a kind of dense black undercoat and an outer layer of hard, harsh hairs that lie close to the body. Color varieties include salt and pepper, black and silver, solid black, pure white, gray and white, and black and white. And all are absolutely beautiful. Needless to say, their beard, which starts at the top of their muzzle, is one of their most recognizable features.
What is the Schnauzer's temperament like?
Schnauzers are fantastic dogs. Those who know them know that they are self-confident, calm, and have a very good temperament. They love to play—they are clearly happy—and have a deep attachment to their ARISTOPARENTS. And to children. They adore them!
Schnauzers have highly developed senses, which makes them perfect guardians. They are also prudent, well-behaved, fearless, and persistent.
