Tips to protect your best friend from the heat

Heat affects not only people but also pets. Although they don't fan themselves, turn the air conditioning to freezing temperatures, or spend all day complaining about the "infernal and unprecedented heat this summer"... it doesn't mean they don't suffer from it. They suffer a lot. That's why we must be mindful of them and take extra precautions to make summer as bearable as possible for them.

It's also important to consider that they don't have the same sweating capacity as we do and their metabolism is higher than ours, so they usually have higher body temperatures, between 38 and 39.5 degrees Celsius. So, it's very likely that they might even have a worse time than we do.

But no matter how much they beg to go outside at midday, don't do it. It's better to stay home between midday and four in the afternoon. If there's no other choice, make sure the walk is short and find shaded areas. If you have the option, do it early in the morning or at dusk.

2. Trim their fur. Just like our mothers did when we were little and summer was approaching. The less fur they have, the better. But don't shave them completely (it's an expression; we know you won't do it). Keep in mind that their fur protects them from weather conditions, both cold and heat; in fact, in summer, it acts as a sunscreen.

3. Keep fresh water accessible. Dogs and cats are very susceptible to dehydration. So, change their water every so often.

4. Do not leave your pet in the car, especially on a hot day. We know you don't do it, but the reality is that this is one of the main causes of companion animal mortality during the summer.

5. Cool your pet's head and neck, especially if it's very hot.

6. Feed them in the morning or at night. This will help them digest better. Heavy meals don't help anyone.

7. If you're traveling with your pet, make sure the vehicle is well-ventilated. Make frequent stops so they can get out and get some air. Also, bring wet towels and plenty of water in case they need to cool down.

8. If you go to the beach, be careful with the sand. We can burn the soles of our feet, right? The same can happen to their paw pads.

If your pet suffers from heatstroke, the most important thing is to quickly lower their body temperature. How to do it?

1. Place them in a cool, shaded area.

2. Provide water for them to drink slowly when they want.

3. Moisten a towel and gently wet their head and abdomen.

4. Place damp cloths over their nose.

5. Fill a container with water and gradually put their paws in it.

In any case, as we said at the beginning, it's best to use common sense and be careful. If you're hot, your pet is too. So protect your best friend and you can enjoy a fantastic summer together.
