How much wet food should I give my cat?

¿Cuánta comida húmeda le doy a mi gato?

A few days ago, we discussed a topic you asked us many questions about: How much wet food should I give my dog? So today we're applying that question to ARISTOCATS: How much wet food should I give my cat?

Throughout their lives, cats have different needs, and their diet must be adapted accordingly. The amount and type of food you should give your cat will vary depending on its size, age, daily physical activity, etc.

Remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that your ARISTOCAT has a balanced, high-quality diet. As we have discussed on more than one occasion, the rate of obesity in pets is increasing more and more, and clearly one of the main causes of this increase is that pets are not being fed appropriate food.

As for wet food, you should consider it part of your cat's diet, but not the main component. In general, your cat will always prefer wet food to dry food because it has more flavor, but it is important not to feed them only that, since dry food also offers many nutritional benefits.

However, wet food has major advantages for your ARISTOCAT. Cats are animals that are not accustomed to drinking much water, and keeping your feline well hydrated is essential for its health. Not drinking enough water can lead to kidney problems, which is not particularly unusual in cats. Dry food usually contains around 10% water, while a serving of wet food can contain up to 80%

As for how much wet food you should give your cat, there are countless opinions. The truth is that, depending on factors such as age, the recommended portions will vary.

For younger cats, from 8 weeks old, when they are fully weaned, wet food should make up a significant part of their diet, since they do not usually drink much water. From 12 months onward, once the cat is an adult, its physical activity, weight, and even breed will be taken much more into account when determining how much to give it. Once your cat is over 7 years old, it will begin to digest proteins and fats less efficiently, so it will need food that is easier to digest, and it will then be advisable to increase the amount of wet food in its diet.

From the Arco Iris Veterinary Clinic (C/ Valverde, 48 – Madrid), veterinarian Rocío Martín tells us that it is a myth that wet food is more fattening than dry food: “Dry or wet food usually causes weight gain equally; it all depends on the amount given to the cat” and she continues: “Dry food is more filling because, when it mixes with gastric juices, it rehydrates and doubles or triples in size in the stomach, creating a greater feeling of fullness. Wet food, on the other hand, is already hydrated, so it is ‘less filling’ and, proportionally, cats eat a greater volume.”

The amount of wet food will range from one serving a week to half a serving every day, but when you give your cat wet food, don't forget to reduce its daily portion of dry food. If you give your cat too much food, it risks becoming obese, which will cause many health problems and reduce its life expectancy. And of course, always make sure that the food you give your ARISTOCAT is high quality.

Rocío reminds us that special emphasis should be placed on the fact that when you add wet food to your cat's diet, you must make sure to proportionally reduce the amount of dry food; people often add the can on top of the daily dry food, which is why cats gain weight, she comments.

If you have a cat, you will certainly know that wet food usually drives them crazy. But cats have very sophisticated tastes, so what is your ARISTOCAT's favorite food? We want to know! And remember that at ARISTOSHOP we have all kinds of wet food to delight your feline.
