With their white coat and black spots, Dalmatians are one of the most distinctive dog breeds. How many times have you seen the movie 101 Dalmatians? Probably more than once.
It was actually writer Dodie Smith, with her book 101 Dalmatians, who popularized this breed, which wasn't so well-known at the time. And from there, Walt Disney's cinematic version was made.
According to “Dog. The Encyclopedia. The Definitive Visual Guide,” the origins of this breed are somewhat complex. The name Dalmatian comes from the coast of Dalmatia in the Balkan region. However, “the link to this area is very small.”
Although their origins are not certain, they became more popular in England in the 19th century, where “they were singularly used as guard dogs” for the upper-middle class. They were also popular for being used as carriage dogs to protect horse-drawn carriages and their riders.
In the US, however, they were fire department dogs, meaning they were the dogs that protected fire trucks.
Characteristics:
One of the most striking characteristics of Dalmatians is their spotted appearance. However, what's remarkable is that "at birth, they are completely white and develop their spots over two or three weeks." The spots are usually black or brown. And the placement of the spots is not uniform; each dog is different.
Their build is large and muscular. Their average height ranges from 48cm to 58cm and their weight is between 22.7 and 25 kg.
Regarding their temperament, they are very active dogs with a lot of energy. They have a strong desire to protect their owners and home. They are a breed that feels very comfortable in the company of people. They are very intelligent dogs and easy to adapt to different environments, although there are always exceptions. However, one of their prominent characteristics, according to the book "Dog. The Encyclopedia. The Definitive Visual Guide," is that they are very reserved with strangers; it takes them time to open up.
Another striking characteristic is their gait. They have an elegant gait, similar to that of horses.
