World Greyhound Day: do not abuse or abandon

Dia mundial del galgo

Every year, thousands of greyhounds are born, many of them bred solely for hunting. Others are lucky enough to be part of a family, leading a healthy and happy life. However, those bred for hunting live a life full of fear and cruelty, especially during the hunting season from October to January.

To highlight this issue, World Greyhound Day has been established on February 1st as a way to unite voices and denounce the harsh suffering these animals endure daily. The hunting season ended yesterday, and on a day like today, many owners no longer want them and abandon them, even abusing them. Together, we must fight to stop animal abandonment and abuse.

As we told you in another article, ARISTOPET temporarily hosted Luigi, a greyhound only a year and a half old, who was rescued from a marginalized area of Madrid in poor condition by the SOS RESCUE team.

Luigi belongs to the Amores Peludos Association, who cared for him until he joined the ARISTOPET family. After meeting him, ARISTOPET set out to find Luigi the home he deserved, and we can say we have succeeded, but we will confirm it soon.

Like Luigi, there are many greyhounds and other breeds that are abandoned and found in marginalized areas in deplorable conditions. The Amores Peludos Association has 70 dogs in the shelter, but today they are taking in 4 more greyhounds that were going to be euthanized, and this week alone they have taken in 12. In total, they have 50 greyhounds. They also have 4 podencos, which, like greyhounds, are dogs used for hunting.

As we said, Luigi has almost found the home he deserves, but now we must try to find one for his companions Athor, Pelusa, and Sofía. Together, we can do it!

Sofia's story

Sofi was rescued by the SOS RECUE team in a marginalized area, where she had been wandering for several days. She was very thin and sick. She is 2 and a half years old.

Athor's story

Athor was found in a marginalized area, just like Sofi and Pelocho. The SOS RECUE team rescued him. Athor was found with injuries and his microchip torn out. He is almost 3 years old.

Pelocho's story

Pelocho was also found in a marginalized area, where he was wandering and scavenging for food in the trash. He is 2 and a half years old.

All of them, except Sofi, who is in a foster home because her tail had to be amputated, are at the shelter waiting to find the family they deserve.
