Did you know that the United States has the largest cat population in North America? No less than 76.5 million ARISTOCATS.
National Cat Day, celebrated last October 29, is supported by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit organization in New York dedicated to combating cruelty to animals since 1886. Its organizers, very active on social media, advocate for adoption as a way to reduce the excessive number of cats in shelters, sterilization and neutering as a solution to end overpopulation and the suffering it causes in felines, and responsible ownership.
Caboodle Ranch was the American cat city, located in Lee, Florida. It was a canine zone with miniature houses, Walmarts, city halls, Starbucks, and other buildings, prepared by and for cats. Recently, it was discovered that its founder Craig Grant was not being entirely honest about the care of the felines. Currently, and after a police investigation, the cats are being treated in veterinary clinics and are in the process of adoption.
WorldAtlas has published data showing the countries with the most cats and the number per citizen. The United States is by far the country with the highest cat population; 1 in 3 households owns a cat. Considering the human population of the country, this number is equivalent to a quarter of the U.S. population, or 25% of the census.
If we look at the number of cats per thousand inhabitants, the order of countries changes, although the United States remains the country with the most felines per inhabitant (237 per 1000).
Gerardo Pérez Camargo, a veterinarian and one of the leading experts in animal behavior, has been working for over 11 years at Nestlé Purina's Central headquarters in St. Louis (United States). He asserts that cats are "the pet of the future" as they fit into new social models, meaning they adapt to smaller homes and are more independent. He is also fully convinced – a trend in the U.S. – about the benefits of pets in the workplace.
If we compare statistics, we see that in the U.S., the number of pets relative to the human population is much higher than in our country. In the U.S., there is almost 1 dog or cat for every two people, while in Spain, it's about 1 dog or cat for every four people. In Spain, the importance of cats is quite notable, as they are the second most popular pet. According to a study by the Madrid Association of Companion Animal Veterinarians (AMVAT), there are 20 million pets in Spain, meaning 40% of Spanish households own a pet. Of these, 2,265,000 are cats, a population only surpassed by dogs (5,147,000).
