The tapetum lucidum is a membrane composed of reflective cells located behind the retina of the eye. From a technical point of view, it is a kind of mirror that allows more light to enter and increases light sensitivity. Dogs also have this membrane.
According to oculist Gerald Massey in his work The Natural Genesis (1883), he stated that "The eye of the cat seems to follow the waxing and waning lunar phases, and its orbits glow like two stars in the darkness of the night."
Do cats have a certain relationship with the moon?
Master William Salmon, in his work "Compleat English Physician," wrote about men's fascination with observing the changes in cats' eyes. "Writers say that they shine at Night and that they see better on the New Moon and worse when it is waxing. Also, they say that their eyes vary with the Sun; the pupil rounds at dawn and lengthens at midday; it is not appreciated throughout the night, but instead the whole eye shines in the dark. I am sure that these variations in the cat's eyes are true, but I have never observed them to coincide with the hours of the day," he argues.
Most ancient astrology books, like Salmon's, establish a certain connection between cats and the stars. Starting with the theories of the Egyptians, so fond of cats, who considered them the incarnation of the goddesses Isis, associated with fertility and the representation of solar rays and instrumental harmony.
Both people and animals are very susceptible to lunar phases to the point of altering their mood. Cats, in particular, characterized by being "crepuscular" and liking the night, may feel more influenced by lunar phases.
