When good weather and heat arrive, dog owners want to make fun plans with their pets. Go to the mountains, to the beach, share experiences in nature!

There are some dogs that love water. They are the first to swim whenever they reach the beach, the river or even the pool. They jump in headfirst!

However, finding natural spaces where dogs are allowed is a bit more complicated. Although, in Madrid and surrounding areas there are more and more dog-friendly reservoirs, swamps, and rivers.

Below, we show you where you can swim with your dog in reservoirs, swamps, and rivers in Madrid and surrounding areas.

Madrid

As Madrid is in the center of the peninsula, it does not have a coastal area or beach, but it does have different reservoirs and swamps where you can cool off and spend a day with your family.

  • The San Juan Reservoir, where La Lancha del Yelmo stands out.
  • Atazar Reservoir
  • The Pinilla reservoir in Lozoya.
  • Eresma River in the Sierra de Guadarrama. There are beautiful views of the Sierra de Guadarrama for hiking and for letting your pet cool off in the river.
  • The Valmayor reservoir in Colmenarejo.
  • Picadas reservoir in Pelayos de la Presa.
  • Navacerrada Reservoir.

Tips

Tips on accessories you shouldn't forget and coexistence rules:

  • Before you go, make sure you can go with a dog.
  • Look for a place where there aren't too many people so as not to bother those who don't like animals and, above all, so that your dog doesn't feel overwhelmed.
  • Check the swimming areas, that they are not dangerous, that there is no current. Nor areas where your pet could get hurt.
  • Try to go on days when there are fewer people, i.e., avoid weekends.
  • Carry your dog's documentation.
  • Carry your dog's anti-parasitic collar and pipette to prevent ticks or insect bites, as these are very humid places.
  • Don't forget your pet's food.
  • Bring your dog some toys to have fun in the water.
  • Bring the necessary bathing accessories, as well as an umbrella, if necessary in case there is not much shade. Coolers to keep the water cold.
