Protect your pet from parasites!

Spring and good weather have finally arrived, which people and especially pet lovers enjoy so much. Days are longer and we can spend much more time with our dogs outdoors. Even, with better temperatures, many more plans can be made.

But one of the most important things to consider with the arrival of spring are parasites and insects. After the cold winter, pets must be protected from insects and parasites, as many are harmful to their health.

Parasites and insects are small organisms that need to feed on different substances generated by the living being itself, as is the case with animals, either internally or on the surface. Most of them cause harmful damage to them.

ARISTOPET, the social platform of the pet universe, has spoken with Rocío Martín, a veterinarian at the Clínica Arco Iris in Madrid, to provide us with basic and important guidelines to protect pets at this time of year. Remember to visit your vet regularly.

When should you start protecting pets from parasites?

Both dogs and cats should always be dewormed. For this, every three months you should give your pet an oral deworming pill, recommended by your vet, to eliminate all internal parasites.

However, with the arrival of good weather, other precautionary measures should be taken, such as the antiparasitic collar or the pipette.

Rocío stressed that the ideal time to start using these two types of dewormers is "when it starts to get warm, more or less in April. Once temperatures rise above 18 degrees. In high-temperature areas, they should always be used, but in interior or northern peninsular areas, from 18 degrees upwards."

How can pets be protected from external parasites?

As mentioned above, the two most effective daily measures to protect your pet from parasites are the collar and the pipette.

Rocío has stated that both are equally effective when they are "high-end brands."

Regarding the question of whether ARISTOCATS should be given a pipette or wear a collar. Rocío confirmed that "any cat that goes outdoors should wear its antiparasitics, whether a collar or a pipette, just like a dog. But if the cat does not go outdoors, it is not essential."

Other products that help prevent parasite contagion in your dog are the Insect Shield bandana or the Insect Shield vest, specifically designed to repel insects. In this case, these types of accessories are treated with permethrin. Permethrin is a harmless compound for both people and animals that repels small insects such as fleas and ticks.

Additionally, in ARISTOSHOP you can discover more accessories such as blankets, beds or cushions that repel insects. All these accessories are perfect for fully enjoying nature with your ARISTODOG, as well as camping trips and country excursions without worrying about parasites.

Other useful products for repelling insects such as lice, fleas, and ticks are sprays or shampoos made with specific substances that repel these types of parasites in pets.

Which regions of Spain require the most precautionary measures?

According to Rocío, "the Levante and Andalusia regions, as well as humid areas near rivers, are the most dangerous, where leishmaniasis predominates." And in all areas of the peninsula, but especially in "the plateau and inland areas, fleas and ticks are predominant."
