In the event of an accident at 50 km/h, the weight of any animal traveling loose in the cabin multiplies by 35, posing a significant danger to occupants.
These are the main conclusions of the report "Pets and Road Safety", prepared by RACE and Royal Canin with the support of #eresresponsable from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), and the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
Only 1.1% of those surveyed admit to traveling with their pet loose or in the arms of an occupant; however, 11.5% say they carry it in the trunk, separated from the other occupants, but not restrained. 87.4% state that they do use a safety device to prevent their pet from being harmed in the event of an accident.
Regarding the restraint systems used, 62% use seat belts or harnesses; 12% use crates secured to the seat with the belt, 10% of users use crates in the trunk, 8% use bars or separating nets, and 4% use crates placed on the floor.
The experts' advice is:
- Use an appropriate restraint system (never secure with a leash or let them travel loose).
- Avoid placing them next to objects that could hit them.
- Control the cabin temperature, monitor the pet during stops (every two hours is best).
- Never leave them inside the vehicle.
