Yoga with cats: the best workout for 2018

Yoga con gatos: el mejor ejercicio para el 2018

There are many types of yoga. These different forms actually come from the nine branches of the yoga tree. That's why we talk about Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Yoga Nidra, and Sivananda Yoga.

Each type of yoga works on different aspects (some are more physically demanding than others, for example), although the ultimate goal is always to achieve communion between body and mind, and secondarily, the union between individual and universal consciousness.

Whatever the case, yoga is in fashion. And that's good news because it's a practice that promotes harmony and individual and collective well-being. So the more people who join, the better.

Likewise, the interesting thing is that it is starting to be an inclusive practice. In the sense that ARISTOPETS are finding their place. Traditional yogi masters might throw their hands up in despair, but the truth is that practicing yoga in the company of our best friends is becoming increasingly popular. And for those looking to find a moment of peace amid the daily hustle and bustle, to share it with their furry friend, it's a great initiative.

That's why some time ago we introduced you to the practice of "doga," which is yoga with dogs. And today we bring you the feline version: yoga with cats.

What can we say about ARISTOCATS that we haven't already said? We love them. We love to see them in all their facets: sleeping soundly (excuse me, paw-soundly), playing, exploring, surprising us with a gesture of absolute, unexpected affection. Cats are love. You know it, the internet knows it, our friends in Japan know it (a culture that has always held cats in high regard. In fact, the first cat cafés emerged there in the 90s). The whole world knows it. That's why it was only a matter of time before we included them in a practice where we seek to leave stress behind and rush, to be at peace and find well-being. What could be better than emptying your mind and filling your spirit with a cat nearby?

Physically, yoga increases flexibility and strength, improves the functioning of all our glands, promotes circulation and blood flow. It corrects our posture. Mentally and emotionally, it also promotes deep relaxation, works on concentration, memory, attention, and, above all, brings peace and emotional stability.

For their part, cats complement this practice because they are naturally flexible. This perfectly matches certain postural exercises carried out during yoga sessions. Likewise, when they are calm... there is nothing more pleasant and relaxing than observing them.

In many cases, the practice of yoga with cats is promoted by associations that protect felines and also by shelters. And so attendees not only have the opportunity to share the experience with the feline, but also, if a spark ignites between them, there is a greater possibility of adopting them.

Two good examples of this come from the United States. The first is "Cat Therapy", a café in Santa Barbara (California), where you can not only have a drink but also practice yoga with cats. The second is "Meow Parlour", which is sweeping Manhattan (NY). Nationally, we cannot forget "La Gatoteca" (Madrid headquarters of the NGO Abriga), which also occasionally offers yoga sessions with cats. Or "Gatuari", in Barcelona.

So if you're thinking of signing up for a sport or physical activity for the new year... Look no further: dare to try "cat yoga."
