5 tips for taking your cat for a walk

5 consejos al sacar a pasear a tu gato

Are you considering taking your cat for a walk? Perhaps you're thinking about providing them with new experiences by having them explore places outside their comfort zone. But something you should keep in mind is that everything will depend on their personality for these adventures to contribute to their well-being and be satisfying and enjoyable for them.

This is because a cat's needs are not the same as a dog's. Unlike dogs, who need to go outside to socialize with other dogs and relieve themselves, felines do so in their litter box and are more territorial.

However, this does not mean that they cannot enjoy walks and the company of other animals. That's why we want to give you a few recommendations.

Accustom them to the harness and leash at home

  • First of all, you will need to get a harness and a leash appropriate for their size. A collar is not as recommended for walks since it is less secure and easier for them to escape if they get scared. Let's not forget that felines are very flexible and agile!
  • Once you have the appropriate accessories, it is important that you do not put the harness on them without first showing it to them, letting them smell it and play with it if necessary. It is essential that they associate the accessory as something positive so that they are not afraid of it in the future and it becomes part of their daily life.
  • The next step will be to accustom them to wearing the harness indoors and incorporating the leash in the same way. It is usually much easier to do this step with young cats, since as they get older they tend to be somewhat more reluctant to changes and new things.
  • It is possible that when you put the harness on them for the first few times, they will walk in a peculiar way due to lack of habit. This is totally normal! Reward them with their favorite treat or play with them so that they get used to wearing it and continue to associate the accessory as a positive experience.

Essential requirements before going out

Once you have accustomed them to wearing the harness and leash indoors, it is important to keep several points in mind before going out:

  • Check their vaccination record to ensure they are properly vaccinated. This is vital to prevent possible diseases.
  • They must be dewormed internally and externally and protected to ward off parasites found outdoors. Remember that especially in spring/summer, there are many parasites that can transmit infectious diseases to our animal. Fleas, ticks, lice, mites… Keep them protected always and prevent possible infestations with antiparasitic products.
  • It is very important that your cat has a microchip. In case of loss, if found by someone, they can be identified thanks to the microchip by a veterinarian. We explain this in more detail here: The identification of our companion animals.
  • Before going out, make sure you bring a carrier with you in case of need.
  • Before taking the plunge, evaluate your prior experience with them at home. Under no circumstances should you force them if you notice they are stressed or scared. Keep in mind that going outside means having access to a great source of stimuli, and depending on their personality, it may not be beneficial for them.

Start with short walks

If you have concluded that the experience can be pleasant for them, choose a quiet place to walk your cat where there is not much traffic or too many other animals. If the path is long and you live in a city, we recommend that you first get a backpack carrier so that they feel protected.

Once you arrive at your adventure location, let them exit on their own (with the harness and leash on) and observe them carefully to see their reaction. It is normal for them to be a bit more cautious at first due to the novelty of the situation, but at the same time curious to discover what is around them. Start with short walks and gradually increase them as you see them become more comfortable and confident. And above all, establish a routine and a commitment as you would with dog walks.

Let them explore at their own free will

Don't try to make them walk the same way a dog would. They are completely different. Let them explore everything they want, but always with caution to prevent them from getting hurt and avoiding them eating something they shouldn't.

If your cat is very curious by nature, they will likely enjoy the new experience, and it will strengthen your relationship. Discovering new places will be a good way to satisfy their exploratory needs and exercise with them, especially if they tend to gain weight easily. The new stimuli will surely keep them active and eager to explore everything around them.

Don't force them to do something they don't want to do

If, on the contrary, you see that when you walk your cat they respond with fear, resist going out, or you notice they are stressed, do not force the situation and try again another time. If you see that the result is the same every time you try, it will be better to give up. Not all cats are predisposed to these new experiences and prefer the comfort of home.

However, it is equally important that they have access to the outside, even if it is through a balcony, window, or terrace. By nature, and to a greater or lesser extent, cats are curious and need that connection with the outside, either in a controlled physical way or a visual access through a closed window.

In case they go out on the balcony or you usually keep the windows open with the arrival of good weather, it is vital that you get a net to avoid possible domestic accidents that could involve your cat. And for your convenience, you can also get a cat flap so they can go outside whenever they please.
