All roads lead to Rome, or in this case to Santiago de Compostela. Many people embark on the Camino de Santiago every year. With no specific starting point, as this route has several depending on each pilgrim's needs, everyone yearns to reach the Plaza del Obradoiro, where they will receive the Compostela.
However, this year has a special feature for all those who complete the Way with their ARISTODOG. The Association for the Protection of Animals of the Way (Apaca) is creating the first Xacobea Credential for dogs that complete the Camino de Santiago with their ARISTOPARENTS. It is not an official credential, but rather something symbolic with a charitable purpose. This initiative aims to promote an ethical, supportive, and animal-friendly route and to raise awareness against animal abandonment. In some cases, dogs are abandoned after completing the Camino de Santiago. For this reason, this association will present the credential to all dogs that finish the Way. To receive it, they must go to the association's headquarters, where they will be given a document very similar to the traditional Compostela for pilgrims.
This canine credential works in the same way as the conventional one. Both must be stamped at the designated points during the pilgrimage. To obtain it, it is necessary to complete a journey of at least 100km regardless of the starting point.
Experts recommend preparing physically and mentally for the pilgrimage. But not only ourselves, but also our dog. If our pet is not used to doing sports, or excessively strenuous exercise, it is advisable to prepare them a few months before the pilgrimage. To do this, we should take them on long walks, gradually increasing the distance of the route.
During the different stages of the Way, we will find several hostels and inns for accommodation and rest. But not all of them admit pets. Before starting the Way, we must make sure which accommodations are pet-friendly and where to find them.
Without a doubt, completing the Camino de Santiago is one of the most exciting and satisfying experiences, but if you are lucky enough to live it with your ARISTODOG, it will be unforgettable.
