¿Cuánta comida húmeda le doy a mi gato?

Cats have different needs throughout their lives, and their diet must be adapted accordingly. The amount and type of food you should give your cat will vary depending on their size, age, daily physical activity, etc.

Remember that it is your responsibility to ensure your ARISTOCAT has a balanced and high-quality diet. As we have discussed on more than one occasion, the rate of pet obesity is increasing more and more, and clearly one of the main causes of this increase is that pets are not fed appropriate food.

Regarding wet food, it is necessary to consider it a part of their diet but not the main element. Generally, your cat will always prefer wet food to kibble because it has more flavor, but it is important that they do not only eat wet food, as kibble also has many benefits for their nutrition.

However, wet food has great advantages for your ARISTOCAT. Cats are animals that do not usually drink much water, and keeping your feline well-hydrated is fundamental for their health. Not drinking enough water can lead to kidney problems, which is not uncommon in cats. Kibble usually contains around 10% water, while a portion of wet food can contain up to 80%.

Regarding the amount of wet food you should give your cat, there are endless opinions. The truth is that depending on factors such as age, the recommended portions will vary.

For younger cats, from 8 weeks old when they are fully weaned, wet food should be a significant part of their diet, as they usually don't drink much water. From 12 months old, once the cat is an adult, the cat's physical activity, weight, and even breed will be much more taken into account to determine how much to give them. Once your cat is over 7 years old, they will start to assimilate proteins and fats less well, so they will need easier-to-digest foods, and then it will be advisable to increase the amount of wet food in their diet.

From the Arco Iris Veterinary Clinic (C/ Valverde, 48 – Madrid), veterinarian Rocío Martín tells us that it is a myth that wet food is more fattening than kibble: "Dry or wet food usually causes weight gain equally; it all depends on the dose given to the cat," and she continues, "kibble is more filling because when it mixes with gastric juices, it rehydrates and doubles or triples its size in the stomach, giving a greater feeling of satiety. In contrast, wet food is already hydrated, and therefore 'fills less,' and proportionally, they eat more volume."

The amount of wet food will vary from one serving a week to half a serving every day, but when you give your cat wet food, don't forget to reduce the daily portion of kibble. If you give your cat too much food, they run the risk of suffering from obesity, which will lead to many health problems and reduce their life expectancy. And of course, always make sure that the food you give your ARISTOCAT is of good quality.

Rocío reminds us that it is especially important to emphasize that when you add wet food to your cat's diet, make sure to proportionally reduce the kibble dose; "people usually add the can in addition to the daily kibble, and that's why cats gain weight," she comments.
