If there is an atypical and unusual cat breed in the world, it is the Sphynx cat, also known as the Egyptian cat. Its main characteristic is the apparent absence of hair on its body.
Sphynx cats are medium-sized and could be described as hairless. Their origin dates back to pre-Columbian times when hairless Mexican cats appeared. However, their most prominent appearance was undoubtedly in Ontario, Canada, in 1966. This was a hairless cat named Prune, which allowed us to discover that the mutation responsible for its main characteristic resided in the recessive hr allele. Gradually, more cats like this appeared, and public interest was ignited, especially in Holland and France.
Although it has taken considerable effort, the breed has finally been recognized by two highly authoritative international entities: The International Cat Association and the Fédération Internationale Féline.
What are Sphynx cats like?
As we mentioned, their distinguishing feature is the absence of fur, which gives them such an original, yet vulnerable, appearance. Their head is also quite striking because it is angular, slightly triangular, and longer than it is wide. Their flat forehead and extremely rounded muzzle contrast with their prominent cheekbones. They generally lack whiskers; but if they have them, they are short and sparse.
Their gaze is hypnotic. They have large, lemon-shaped eyes, set wide apart with the upper angle pointing towards the ear. Speaking of ears, they are very large, wide at the base, and completely bare inside.
In terms of size, Sphynx cats are medium. They are well-muscled and have a very broad, barrel-shaped chest. Their legs are proportionate. Their tail is medium and thin, whip-like, quite similar to a rat's.
What is the Sphynx cat's personality like?
These felines are lively, mischievous, playful, and independent. They are sociable with other cats, regardless of breed, and with dogs. In general, they are affectionate, one might even say possessive. They love cuddles.
How to care for Sphynx cats?
Unlike other ARISTOCATS breeds, Sphynx cats sweat through their skin, so they need regular hygienic care. The best approach? Wash them with a sponge or a bathing mitt. Bathing them is not recommended. And special attention should be paid to their ears, which should be cleaned periodically.
Living in an apartment or flat is good for them, as they are especially sensitive to extreme temperatures, both cold and hot, as well as humidity. In winter, it is necessary to provide them with energetic rations to maintain their body temperature, as it is slightly higher than the species average.
It is advisable to prevent them from being exposed to the sun, as this can cause sunburn due to their lack of hair.
