The Public Prosecutor's Office warns about the increase in pet adoptions to circumvent lockdown

La Fiscalía alerta sobre el aumento de adopciones de mascotas para incumplir el confinamiento

The Chief Prosecutor for Environmental Affairs warns that when the state of alarm ends, if abandonments occur, a crime would be committed.

The Environmental Prosecutor's Office has reported that mass adoptions are taking place, many of which are solely to bypass confinement.

One of the exceptions for leaving home is permission to walk dogs. This measure was taken precisely to protect animals and thus prevent their possible abandonment. Thus, many people have seen in this rule a loophole to circumvent the confinement imposed by the government.

Antonio Vercher, Chief Prosecutor for Environmental Affairs, warned in a written statement, "It is foreseeable that, once the state of alarm has passed, abandonments of animals adopted in the context just described will begin to occur. The abandonment of animals, in conditions where their life and integrity may be endangered, constitutes a crime under Article 337 bis of the Penal Code. It is for this reason that it is requested not only that criminal proceedings be initiated to restore the altered legal order when such abandonments occur, but also that this official letter be communicated to public or private entities with competence in the matter, so that they are in a position to inform the Prosecutor's Office of the occurrence of such abandonments, thereby facilitating the application of the Penal Code."

Therefore, the Environmental Prosecutor has urged close attention to the return and abandonment of animals once the state of alarm passes, because those who do so could be committing a crime of animal abuse, as set forth in Article 337 of the Penal Code.

It should be mentioned that many of these adoptions are done altruistically, as many people now do have the time to dedicate to caring for their animals.

Therefore, it is also true that adoptions of other animals have increased, not only dogs, but also cats and other domestic animals such as hamsters, birds,... So it can be seen that there is a double current in this situation we find ourselves in. ARISTOPET supports responsible and disinterested adoption. Because we love pets.
