The Municipal Transport Company of Madrid (EMT) has approved new regulations that modify the "travel rules" for buses, the novelty of which is that all dogs can travel on board the bus on their own four paws.
This proposal is pending approval by the Delegated Commission of the Regional Transport Consortium of Madrid and, ultimately, by the Ministry of Transport of the Community of Madrid.
Until now, dogs could travel on buses, but they had to be small and in a carrier. However, this modification allows any dog to access the bus on its own four paws. This proposal is not only an improvement for the pet world but also for the environment. Many owners used cars to travel with their dogs because they were not allowed on buses or could not use the Metro due to time restrictions. Therefore, this initiative will allow fewer dog owners to travel in their own vehicles. The regulations remain the same for people with visual disabilities, ensuring their complete freedom to access the bus with guide dogs.
Regulations for traveling on the bus with your dog
Therefore, dogs can travel on their own four paws, but they must be on a leash and wearing a muzzle. In addition, they must sit or lie under the owner's seat and in the front part of the buses. According to the regulations, "dogs will be allowed access every day of the week during all service hours except on weekdays between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM and between 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM." Only one dog will be allowed per bus. If there is already a dog on the bus when you are waiting, you must wait for the next one, respecting the queue order. And one of the most important things is that any owner who wants to access the bus with their ARISTODOG must have a specific authorization card issued by EMT.
