After an intense campaign and the most-watched political debate in US history, there are Americans who still don't know whether to vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton or Republican Donald Trump in the presidential elections to be held in November 2016.
There are other independent candidates who have received very little media coverage; but one has caught our attention: the “demo-cat” (or democratic cat in Spanish) Limberbutt McCubbins.
McCubbins is the Aristocat rescued by Emilee McCubbins, an 18-year-old from Louisville, Kentucky. Her school friend Isaac Weiss, 17, was responsible for registering the pet as a Democratic candidate, and he is in charge of her electoral campaign.
With her slogan "The time is meow," Limberbutt promises to bring peace and well-being to felines nationwide, as announced through her campaign on Facebook and on her Website.
During his campaign, this 6-year-old cat has committed to protecting the environment and has promised electoral reform: after seeing how easy it was to register the cat, some "Aristoparents" believe that the process for registering candidates should be a little more serious.
It is not the first time an animal has run for an election campaign in the United States. Technically, no American law prohibits an animal from becoming a presidential candidate: the constitution only states that they must be citizens born in the country, without specifying that they must be a "human person." Thanks to this interpretation of the law, at least one cat and two dogs have been elected mayors, and even a goat in Lajitas, Texas.
According to his campaign manager, Limberbutt understands that he will probably not win this election. Instead, he would like to use his popularity to inform his numerous followers about the importance of voting in all elections.
