Many times we are surprised to see that our furry friends understand what we say. According to this study, they are able to understand phrases that are relevant to them and are related to something good. These can be phrases like: "come here", "let's go outside" or the famous and magical word "treat". And they can even understand their own name.
250 dogs participated in the study, listening to different recorded messages, to analyze their reaction on each occasion.
Sometimes they heard relevant phrases, like "come here", but without intonation. It was shown that the intonation of each phrase greatly influences the comprehension of the message. In others, they heard nonsensical phrases, but in a positive way.
To know which of the two hemispheres was processing the information, they looked at whether the dog had looked to the left, which would mean that the right hemisphere was processing the information, and vice versa.
Thanks to this study, it was confirmed that dogs process information similarly to humans.
Another trait that suggests dogs understand us when we talk is their head tilt when we speak to them. If you usually talk to your dog, something very common among owners, you will have noticed this movement. It may seem like a very sweet gesture, but they are actually trying to understand us.
