The new law for dogs highlights the obligation to walk these pets a minimum of twice a day, for at least an hour. In addition, they cannot be left alone all day.
German dogs will be walked twice a day by law. This is the new measure ordered by the German Minister of Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, due to evidence that many of the country's 9.4 million dogs are not receiving the necessary exercise or sufficient stimulation for their well-being.
The study concluded that dogs need “a sufficient measure of activity and contact with environmental stimuli.” These stimuli include contact with other animals, nature, and people.
Tying dogs with a chain or leash for long periods of time could also be completely prohibited.
Dogs, the minister argues, cannot be left alone at home all day, and a person will be required to care for their animal “several times a day.” “Dogs are not cuddly toys. They have their own needs, which must be taken into account,” she said.
This new dog law, also called “Hundeverordnung,” will be presented in 2021. The first criticisms have already emerged, such as that older dogs may not be able to maintain that rhythm, or when temperatures are high due to the heat.
