The Devon Rex breed is the result of a mutation, as is the case with other breeds we have already discussed, such as the Munchkin. In this case, the mutation affects the curly hair and dates back to 1960. This mutation was detected in a specimen that lived in the county of Devon (in southwest England), and the name of this county became the name of the breed. Today, years later, the breed has already been recognized by the International Feline Federation.
What are Devon Rex cats like?
At first glance, they show a great similarity to Sphynx cats. Both breeds are medium-sized, slender, with a light and sinewy appearance, and a very arched back.
However, they have a fundamental difference: Sphynx cats have no hair, while Devon Rex cats have their bodies covered with a protective, fine, silky, and surprisingly curly down, which feels very similar to peach fuzz.
Their triangular head has three very distinct curves: the cheekbones, the outer line of the ears, and the whisker pads. Some say they have a somewhat alien-like expression, but we find them singularly beautiful.
What is the temperament of Devon Rex cats like?
The most wonderful thing about these cats is their temperament. One might think, at first impression, that they are shy and sad cats. But nothing could be further from the truth! Devon Rex cats have an extraordinary predisposition to be with people. They connect deeply and have great sensitivity. They adore their ARISTOPARENTS. And they follow them wherever they go. If you are cleaning the house, your cat will curiously follow you. If you are on the sofa, you won't have to "beg" for their affection: the cat will always tend to lie on your lap. When you go to sleep, the Devon Rex will seek you out in bed. And this is due to their affectionate, sensitive, calm, and playful nature.
In addition to this, the Devon Rex has a very soft meow and remarkable intelligence, which allows them to learn tricks easily and makes them a great playmate.
How to care for Devon Rex cats?
There are a couple of fundamental aspects that an ARISTOPARENT should pay attention to.
From a physical point of view, their coat requires the most care. Grease tends to accumulate in their curly fur, so it's advisable to "pet" them frequently with a flannel glove to keep it shiny and clean. You also need to pay attention to their ears, which, being so long, tend to get dirtier than in other breeds.
Likewise, they are good eaters. Therefore, their diet must be controlled, as they have a significant tendency to gain weight.
Emotionally, it's important to know that Devon Rex cats do not tolerate prolonged solitude. Exposure to it creates anxiety and negatively affects them. Therefore, it's important to avoid it. It is also important to note that their intelligence needs to be stimulated, so it is important to enrich their environment and dedicate time to play with them.
Otherwise, they adapt perfectly to life in apartments as well as in houses with gardens. So, they are, without a doubt, good life companions with whom we will have a great deal of affection and fun moments in daily life.
