The Maine Coon is a typical American cat; in fact, another of its names is "American longhair." It is believed to have originated in the late 18th century, but there are no written sources to prove it. Therefore, there are stories and legends surrounding these impressive cats... largely related to boat trips from Europe.
One of the most widespread stories is that this breed originated from the spontaneous crossbreeding of the American lynx with domestic cats that arrived in the New Continent from Europe. This belief can only be supported by the physical resemblance—which is more than evident—but it is unsustainable according to the laws of genetics, as crossbreeding between both species is reproductively unviable.
The name Maine Coon is a tribute to two very American things: Maine, the coastal state in the northeast of the country, near Canada; and "coon" which comes from "raccoon," meaning raccoon, with which they also share certain similarities: the striped pattern of their coat, but also their soft, high-pitched meow reminiscent of young raccoons. Thus, we could say they are "the raccoons of the state of Maine."
What are Maine Coon cats like?
Above all, they are huge cats. Big cats, one might say. Thanks to their wild appearance and large size. Males can weigh between 7 and 10 kilos. And females, between 5 and 7. They are strong, heavily muscled cats. Their chest area is large, and their legs are thick and long. Their tail is one of the longest and furriest among domestic feline species.
In addition to their size, which earned a cat of this breed the Guinness World Record for the largest cat, their abundant fur also does not go unnoticed—necessary to cope with the harsh living conditions of the northeastern United States.
The Maine Coon's gaze is irresistible. With those large, oval, oblique eyes. Generally, very green (except for white cats, which may have blue eyes or one of each color).
Its head is angular, with high and prominent cheekbones. Its large, square-contoured muzzle stands out, with a pronounced indentation between it and the cheekbones. Also very striking are the ears, large and often topped with a tuft of hair reminiscent of a lynx's.
What is the temperament of Maine Coons like?

The Maine Coon sheds its fur periodically, in spring and autumn, although since it usually lives indoors, shedding is constant. Therefore, it is essential to brush it regularly and bathe it occasionally. For this, appropriate tools and products must be used. Not just any brush or shampoo will do; they must be designed, respectively, for long hair and for cat skin. Using a conditioner is also a good idea, as it helps keep the hair free of tangles.
